Wow, this was a HARD pick to make! I read so many excellent books this year! But I managed to narrow it down to 5 books that I really loved and will stay with me forever. Note that I did not include rereads, but wanted to give my new discoveries a chance to shine. They also did not have to be published in 2018 to be on the list. So here they are!!
Nr 5: War Storm by Victoria Aveyard
Love the whole series! Waited such a long time time for War Storm and was not disappointed! Action, emotions, great world building and great characters. This was my first dystopia series btw, so it’s kind of like a first love. I will keep it in my heart and never forget it! When I’m 85 I will still be saying this to my grandkids: “Rise, red as the dawn.”
Nr 4: A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet
The sucker-punch of the year! Did not see this level of randiness coming! (My jaw literally dropped to the floor) Everyone says that you should not judge a book by its cover, but damn the UK edition had me fooled!
Anyway.. *discreetly wipes away drool* The whole book was extremely compelling and filled with emotion and life from start to end. Read it in one go and forgot to eat dinner! And food is not easy to make me forget. So top marks!
Nr 3: The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
Not what I expected.. And I loved it! I newer knew what was going to happen and was at the edge of my seat the entire book (and series for that matter). Complex characters and relationships, it’s gritty and rough and nothing is black and white. Sometimes I just thought that George RR Martin must have posessed Erika Johansen, this is almost Song of Ice and Fire level! (P.S. The last book blew my f-ing mind!)
Nr 2: Fool’s Fate by Robin Hobb
I love EVERY Hobb book! She is an AMAZING author (and a lovely person as I found out during a Q&A) and I just picked Fool’s Fate because I finally got some answers I really needed about some of the characters. But it could have been any of them, all are equally amazing. Have to stop typing now, or it will turn into a million-word love letter to Hobb. If you have not, read her books! You’ll not be sorry.
Nr 1!! Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas
I laughed, I cried, I gasped and I bit my nails. This book (ney, the whole series) is spot on! The writing is excellent, the characters have great depth and are compelling to read about, the pacing shifts in the right places and the world building has exactly the amount of detail that make it enjoyable but not boring. And all of these elements makes up one beautiful (and brutal) work of art! I actually cried when I finished because this book is the last in the series. No doubt my favorite book of 2018!
And here are some honorary mentions:
- Hello Kitty Must Die by Angela S. Choi – One of my all time favorite books which I read in english for the first time this year. Love it!
- The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K Rowling – Just lovely! Will be reading this to any child who wants to listen
- The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski – My favorite starcrossed lovers of the year!
- Evenfall by Gaja J. and Boris Kos – Can’t wait for the next one!
- Circe by Madeline Miller – This is how you do a retelling!
