Author: Stephanie Garber
Series: Caraval #2
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…the games have only just begun.
Read my review of Caraval here!
At the end of the first book we discover that there’s more to Tella’s involvement in getting the sisters into Caraval. She did so with the help of a mysterious and likely dangerous contact. Now her mysterious “friend” wants payment, both for favours done and for information on the whereabouts of the sisters mother. And what she must deliver as payment is Legends true name.
This time Caraval will be held at Valenda, the capital city of The Meridian Empire, at the behest of Empress Elantine. The sisters travels there together with the performers and Tella tries to ask around for clues about who Legend really is. But all she discovers is that she can only get his true name by participating in the games herself and win a wish from Legend.
Tella now has to win Caraval and deliver Legends true name to her mysterious contact, or risk losing her life and her mother will be lost forever.
Nice to get more background story on both Tella and Scarlet. What happened to their mother was never satisfactory explained in the first book. And some players true faces are revealed, or are they? One can NEVER be sure with these books.
The story is just as intriguing and unpredictable as in Caraval, but it goes to a darker place this book. And me being a sucker for twisted, dark and dangerous plots ate it up! And that is the sole reason why I enjoyed Legendary just a tiny bit more. It was all consuming and nothing could get me to put the book down.
How do you describe a group of people who are probably not who they say they are and you meet during a game full of deceit, illusions and magic? My answer; I don’t.
I feel that the characters we meet are still well written and manages to make me laugh or scare the shit out of me if they so pleases. I still don’t trust anybody, except for Tella. I only half trust Scarlet now because of the fact that the girl has grown a backbone and I’m not sure what she’s capable of anymore. I applaud it at the same time as it scares me like hell! What is the girl up to?
And once again I had no idea what was going down. In Caraval I was hit with very unpredictable turns and the writing did not follow any common patterns I usually see in YA. But this time, armed as I was with the knowledge that nothing is going to be predictable, Stephanie Garber trows in some very YA plot twists that I could not see because I ignored them and looked in 500 other directions. She got me good! I was really pissed off once or twice because one part of my mind knew the events was coming because of obvious hints, but my Caraval mind went; ”Too easy.. Maybe Legend is actually Scarlet’s ever-changing dress!?”
Except for the tiny problem of me not being fully attached to any character due to trust issues, I love, Love LOVE this book!! There’s never a boring moment, really hard to predict and the characters are such a unique and fantastic bunch! 4,5 stars!! Now give me Finale ASAP!!
You who has read Legendary; I want to send a huge fist-bump to Scarlet after the end of this book. She should make Julian work for it! Way to go!
What do you guys think?
